I’ve always wondered if, for music videos, the artist gets any input on the concept? How much creative control do you have over what the video winds up being about, looking like, etc? And, if you wrote the song, do you get more input? Sorry…that’s a few questions in one, isn’t it?!

Well, thanks for your question, Karlee! Ultimately, the artist makes the call, but most of the time the record label will have ideas submitted from video directors to see if there’s a fresh idea to work with, and if the artist likes one of those ideas and the budget makes sense. it will probably get made.
Again, it depends on the artist, but most of them want to put their spin on it… I can’t think of any directors who wouldn’t allow that kind of input – and songwriters rarely have a say so unless the artist wants to ask for their creative opinion.
There’s a lot of creative ideas out there right now, like Kacey Musgraves’ "Merry Go Round." Check that one out – she and a friend put that together on their computer pulling pieces off the internet (Watch it here.) – creativity is kind – always!
