This week's question is from Grace who writes…
Hi Kix,
I was wondering how the chart system works. Like, why a song gets on the charts and why it is that some songs stay on there longer than others? For example, Hunter Hayes’ song "Everybody’s Got Somebody But Me," only made it to #18 and then came off the charts, meanwhile, his song "Wanted" went to #1.
Thanks for your time. Keep up the good work!
God Bless,
Grace

Kix's Response:
Well, Grace, most of the big stations around the country are picked to be on what is called the panel and the songs they are playing and how much they are playing them all go into a computer and the computer spits out what order the songs should be in.
And, the reason they play them comes from research that comes from you guys. They call people at random and ask them what they’re listening to and you guys make requests. They even have a thing called a people meter that people wear and it actually lets you know which songs all those people listen to during the day and when they change the channel if they don’t like something, etc.
All that research tells the folks that program the radio stations which songs you like and which songs you don’t. So, no matter who the artist is, if ya’ll aren’t digging it, it won’t get played very long.
Obviously, if Carrie Underwood or Luke Bryan or Jason Aldean has a new song, it’s going to get played in the beginning, but as time goes on you guys have to support it or it falls off the chart like anybody else’s – that’s what makes it exciting!
Thanks for your question, Grace!
