This week’s Hero nomination comes from Alex who writes…

Dear Kix,

My name is Alex Monahan and my nomination is for a large group of people that mean the world to me!

When I was seven years old, I fell backwards into a lit fire pit and received third degree burns on the back of my legs and a small second degree burn on my arm. Luckily, my siblings were there to pull me out before my injuries got any worse.

After this traumatic experience, I was sent to the hospital where the doctors and nurses inside the burn unit took very good care of me. When I was finally released, I got to go to a camp called WAFS Burn Camp. There, I was able to spend time with kids like myself, relax, and find out who I really was without any judgmental stares.  Now, I’ve been going to the same camp for almost eight years!  It’s a safe haven for not only me, but for all of the burn victims that go there. We all have an unbreakable family bond.

My journey would not have been possible if it weren't for my siblings, the counselors at camp, or the amazing doctors and nurses at the burn unit at UW Health Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. These people never get the recognition they deserve for all that they have done for me and many others, and I just wanted to tell them thank you for everything!

Thank you, Kix, also, for taking the time to read this!

Sincerely,
Alex

Kix's Response:

Thanks so much for sharing, Alex.

Burns are such a terrible injury. A big thanks go out to all you doctors and nurses who spend every day helping folks with these very painful recoveries.
