This week’s question is from David who writes…
Hi Kix,

I’ve always wondered why some artists use multiple guitars in their shows.  I’ve been to some concerts and it seems they change guitars on every song. Do you use more than one? Do you have a favorite?

Thanks!

Sincerely,

David

Kix’s Response:

Good question, David.

There are several reasons a player might change guitars…most likely, it is the tone a particular guitar has. Some guitars like Fender Telecasters, like Brad Paisley plays, are bright and kind of twang-y – a classic country sound. And, there are lots of different styles and brands that have personalities of their own that a player will use to match a certain sound that might have been on the single.

The other reason could be a special tuning that a guitar has for a particular song and you don’t want that tuning for the next one.  And, sometimes you just bang one out of tune and don’t have time to tune it for the next song…

Those guitar techs are generally really good players and do a great job of making you look good, sort of like caddies are to golfers.

And, I do have some favorites… These days with the Reba/Brooks & Dunn shows in Vegas we have combined our bands and have two great lead guitar players, so I’m playing Gibson acoustics almost the whole show. I like the J-200 which is a big jumbo style with a great sound, and I play a red, white and blue Telecaster that Buck Owens gave me for “Only in America”… it always make me smile to crank that one up!
