We discovered this inspiring story on the Fox 5 News website, and we wanted to feature his amazing dad as our Hero this week.

Carlos Pettigrew, an AP Language and drama teacher, was in the middle of a parent-teacher conference when he got the call. His 13-year-old daughter called from their neighbor’s house to tell him their home had caught fire.  However, the phone died before she could tell her dad that she and her brother were fine.

Scared for his children’s lives, Carlos rushed to his car to head to his family. Unfortunately, he was driving so fast that he lost control of his vehicle, hit two curbs, and the car flipped upside down. Miraculously, he crawled out and ran another half-mile to reach his children!  Thankfully, when he arrived, he found them safe and sound.

It just goes to show the determination of a parent when their child’s safety is at risk.  Carlos says that he would have done anything to get to them… and he proved that!

Sadly, their home suffered massive amounts of damage and his car is also in very bad shape.  So now, the students at the school where he teaches have started a Go-Fund-Me page and have raised over $27,000 to put towards their $50,000 goal.

Kix’s Response:

It sounds like we have multiple heroes here – stuff happens and all we can do is all we can do. Good luck getting things put back together, Carlos. It sounds like the really valuable things in your house are okay, and in times like these with good friends and family, there’s really no limits to what you can accomplish. I got a good feeling about this one.
