The Song Remembers When: “Red Solo Cup” – Toby Keith

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

So, “Red Solo Cup” was recorded by Toby Keith back in 2011. Now, the tune was co-written by two sets of brothers: Brad and Brett Warren, who have written a lot of stuff for Tim McGraw and other people, and Jim and Brett Beavers.

Now, Brett Warren told the story of how the four of them got together to form a fake college band called The Warren Beavers! Trouble was they played all the instruments, so it wasn’t all that fake. Anyway, they started playing colleges and that’s where the idea came from – basically a love song to a cup!

The guys never actually intended for this song to be pitched to other artists, but they played it for a band called Trailer Choir, who was on Toby’s label, and they actually asked if they could play the thing for Toby! Well, after hearing it, Toby said, ‘Man, that’s the stupidest song I’ve ever heard, and I can’t get it out of my head!’ Well, the song became a Top 10 hit and went on to sell two million copies!

So, this week, we remember “Red Solo Cup” by Toby Keith:
