The Song Remembers When: “Drunk on a Plane” – Dierks Bentley

So, “Drunk on a Plane” was the third single from Dierks Bentley’s 2014 album Riser. It went on to become a number one hit and a fan favorite.

Now, Dierks said that he showed up to a writing appointment with songwriters Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins with an idea of writing a song called “Hurricane You.” And, he told his co-writers about it. He said, “It’s about a girl and hurricane.” And, they looked at him less than enthusiastic, and Dierks knew this probably was not the best idea he’s ever had. And then Josh threw out the idea of being drunk on a plane and everybody went – “Yeah, that’s it!”

Dierks has said that Riser was an album that was full of some heavy material and that “Drunk on a Plane” was needed to help balance out the project. It might not have been as serious as some other songs, but it was just as important.
