Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Kidde Hero of the Week…

This week, we’re shining the spotlight on a man who is really making a difference in his community.

Tony Hillery – you might not know his name, but you need to know what he does. He founded Harlem Grown, a nonprofit that teaches low income, inner city kids about farming in their own communities. Tony believes that healthy habits start young, so his programs target elementary kids. The program teaches these kids how to grow fresh food.

In the middle of Harlem, Tony and his staff teach these kids about composting to recycling to planting fruits and vegetables. And, most of the kids that are involved in this program live below the poverty line.  Urban farming is really making a difference in these communities, giving these children a chance at eating healthier.

Tony Hillery is our Hero of the Week! There are 39 elementary schools in Harlem and Harlem Grown is only in six, so 33 more to go. One person in a community really can make a difference!

Find out more about Tony and Harlem Grown in their CNN Heroes feature. Plus, check out the official Harlem Grown website.
