The Song Remembers When: “It Goes Like This” – Thomas Rhett

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In October of 2013, Thomas Rhett went to the top of the countdown for the first time with the title cut from his debut album, It Goes Like This. It was written by Thomas’ dad, Rhett Akins, along with Ben Hayslip and Jimmy Robbins.

When the song was completed, Thomas had already wrapped up the recording of his album. But, as luck would have it, his label called hoping to get him to cut a few more tunes. He went back to his dad to see if that song he had heard was still available. Fortunately, it was.

After hearing the final recording, Thomas’ reaction was immediate – not only did he love it, but his wife and friends couldn’t stop singing it! As for writing the song, Thomas’ dad Rhett said that it started out on the ukulele. He was just fooling around on this thing, and Jimmy, who was co-writing with him on that day, jumped in on guitar and the melody started to come to them along with the lyrics.

The song became Thomas’ first number one and it went on to sell two million copies!

So, this week’s The Song Remembers When is Thomas Rhett’s “It Goes Like This:”
