Diane Cunningham nominates firefighter William Gressen, 12-year career veteran of the Prince George’s County Fire Department in Maryland. She writes:

On the early morning hours of July 9th, Firefighter Gressen was traveling down the highway when he noticed a light coming from a wooded area off the side of road.  He was off duty, but he turned around to make sure there was nothing wrong.

When he got there, he noticed a car had gone off the embankment, about a 125-foot drop. He climbed down there and discovered a woman unconscious and bleeding. She was strapped in her seat from her seat belt.  He was able to get her out of the car and call for help. The 22-year-old female was flown to the hospital and survived the accident. Firefighter Gressen’s quick thinking and reaction certainly seems to be hero-worthy.

Signed,
Diane

Kix’s Response:

Diane, thank you for writing in and sharing this story. And, I agree with you, Firefighter Gressen’s ability to notice something wrong and his training to act are truly commendable. And, to make a steep climb 125 feet down to investigate? Even more impressive!

Thank you, William Gressen, for your service, and you are our Kidde Hero of the Week!
