The Song Remembers When: “Mama’s Broken Heart” – Miranda Lambert

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2013, Miranda Lambert would take her song “Mama’s Broken Heart” to number one. The song would go on to receive a ton of recognition including a Grammy nomination.

The song was written by Shane McAnally, Brandy Clark, and Kacey Musgraves. And, Brandy said that it was Shane who came up with the idea of “not your mother’s…” something. And then, he started to talk about his sister’s breakup and how their mom was like you need to deal with this better. And, they knew they were on to something when someone said “not your mama’s broken heart.”

Well, Brandy said that the recording was good, but it was Kacey who went home and added some changes. She put on some hand claps and some more guitars and really made this thing sound special.

Now, when Miranda heard it, she wanted to cut it, but Kacey was also recording, so they made a deal – Miranda could have it as long as Kacey could sing the harmonies.

It became the ACM Single of the Year in 2014, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – Miranda Lambert’s “Mama’s Broken Heart:”
