Robert Wright wrote in to nominate Luther Slay of Pilot Point, Texas, as this week’s Hero. He writes:
In 1980, while Luther was the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, he came up with the idea of a store that could help those who were struggling to buy basics, like food and clothing, in their local community. Out of that dream, came The Shepherd’s Storehouse, a place that helped a few families in the area all based on donations from the Calvary Baptist Church.
Well, today, The Shepherd’s Storehouse is a nonprofit charitable organization that has grown. It’s in its own building on its own parcel of land all given by donations from churches of all denominations, school drives, as well as individuals and organizations throughout the community. They provide food, clothing, diapers, school supplies and so many items to those in need in the community. And, thanks to the North Texas Food Bank, they’re able to obtain donated canned good and nonperishable food items for a maintenance fee, which further extends the buying power of each and every dollar.
From its humble beginnings to assisting so many throughout the Pilot Point, Texas area, Luther Slay is a true hero.
Signed,
Robert

Suzanne’s Response:
Well, Robert, thank you so much for writing in, and what an incredible story!
Luther had the dream and it took the community working together to see this dream grow into something so much bigger than all of them… It’s a testament to what can happen when we come together with a common desire to help. Luther Slay – our Kidde Hero of the Week!
