Last weekend, Hurricane Florence hit the east coast of North Carolina, and parts of South Carolina, and the flooding that has continued is making it hard for search and rescue teams. There has been loss of life, along with massive home damage, and many are still without power.
Stories are pouring in about rescue efforts, not only by first responders but by volunteers. And, it’s hard to single any one person out, but here is an example of one man helping those affected in the area.
A man named George Ruiz drove into the area from Alabama. With 20 years in the Coast Guard as a rescue boat driver, George put his skills to use. In the first two days after the storm, he rescued a few hundred, including rescuing a man in a wheelchair who lived alone and a 90-year-old woman who didn’t want to leave her home.
I’m sure we’ll continue to hear more stories as the weeks go on. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.
To all of you out there like Mr. Ruiz, putting your lives at risk to help others, we salute you as our Kidde Heroes of the Week.
