The Song Remembers When: Brett Young – “Like I Loved You”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Back in January, Brett Young celebrated “Like I Loved You” reaching the top of the Billboard Country Airplay Chart. The song would remain at number one for three straight weeks!

He co-wrote it with Jesse Lee, who had just reached number one with “Peter Pan” which had been recorded by Kelsea Ballerini.

At the time, Brett didn’t have a label deal. He was new to Nashville, and, as he puts it, he was just happy to be in the room with a writer who had just had a big hit.

Well, they realized after a few hours of not getting anywhere in the writing session that they might as well just go to lunch. And, it was then that Jesse told Brett about a break up and how her soon-to-be-ex just wanted to be friends.

Brett said that her passion for not being friends with her ex was something that needed to be written – that story of loving someone so much that after a break-up, a friendship was just not in the cards. Once they had that emotion going, the song came together fairly quickly.

Here’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – Brett Young and “Like I Loved You.”
