The Song Remembers When: Chris Lane featuring Tori Kelly – “Take Back Home Girl”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2018, Chris Lane released his second studio album Laps Around The Sun. The project’s lead single was a duet with pop artist Tori Kelly titled “Take Back Home Girl.” The song was written by Hillary Lindsey, David Garcia, and Josh Miller. This would be the second writing session for Josh and Hillary.

It was during their first writing session when Josh brought up the idea of “Take Back Home Girl.” He was getting ready to take his girlfriend home to his family for the first time. Although they didn’t write the song at the time, Hillary remembered the idea and brought it up the second time they were writing together. She asked Josh if he had written it yet, and since he hadn’t, they decided to give it a go. David Gracia created a track while Josh and Hillary wrote lyrics based around Josh’s original idea.

The demo was sent to Chris Lane’s manager, who then sent it to Chris and his label. They all thought that this song should be a collaboration. And, when he was asked who his dream partner would be, Chris had one name in mind – Tori Kelly.

The song peaked inside the Top 10 last year at number eight, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When… Here’s Chris Lane and Tori Kelly with “Take Back Home Girl.”
