The Song Remembers When: Jimmie Allen – “Best Shot”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Having your first song out of the gate go all the way to number one is not typical for an artist, but that’s exactly what happened for Jimmie Allen in 2018. Jimmie cowrote “Best Shot” with Josh London and JP Williams.

Jimmie said that he had the melody in his head for a while, so he brought the idea to his writing session. The guys played around with the melody and that’s when one of them threw out the line: “When you smile, I see the sun sink down on a coast out in California.” That became the first line of the chorus. Although the trio were off to a good start, it didn’t come together all in one session. They said that it took several sessions before they completed the song.

For Jimmie, he wanted to write something truthful, something that described him, something that said, “I’m not perfect but I’m going to be the best I can for you.” The end result topped the chart beginning in November of 2018 for two weeks, then returned to number one for a third week in December. And, it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – Jimmie Allen and “Best Shot.”
