The Song Remembers When: Chris Stapleton – “Millionaire”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Chris Stapleton hit the Top 5 back in March 2019 with “Millionaire.” Although he is known as a great songwriter, Chris actually didn’t write this one. The song had been recorded multiple times since it was written by singer-songwriter Kevin Welch, who recorded it back in 2002. In 2006, it was even covered by legendary soul artist Solomon Burke.

Kevin said that the song was written at a time when he had just started a new relationship. It was about expressing that feeling of being rich in love.

Chris had been playing the song at home for years because he just loved to sing it. And, when he was recording his album From A Room: Volume 2, he knew that the song would be a perfect fit.

Chris’ version of “Millionaire” reached just shy of number one on Billboard’s Country Airplay Chart, and the song went on to earn a nomination for Best Solo Performance at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards. And, here it is, this week’s The Song Remembers When – Chris Stapleton with “Millionaire.”
