Hero of the Week: Candi Carter

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we turn the spotlight on New Jersey mom Candi Carter.

Candi’s son Emerson has developmental differences. And, she noticed that while other teenagers were meeting up with friends and having get togethers, her son was being left out. So, Candi decided to create a space for kids with special needs called We’ve Got Friends.

She organized a gathering with moms who also had teenagers like Emerson. She would buy a few pizzas, turn some music on, and the kids would hang out like other kids do. At first, it was just three or four kids, but today, that group has grown into four groups of over 60 kids. And now, Candi Carter is looking to take this program nationwide.

Kix’s Response:

Man, isn’t that a tremendous gift for these kids?! Every child should get to experience having friends and having a safe place to express themselves…

So, Candi Carter, you are our ACC Hero of the Week!
