The Song Remembers When: Eric Church – “Drink In My Hand”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In January of 2012, Eric Church’s “Drink In My Hand” would become his very first number one country single. It was from his album Chief.

A year earlier, Eric was touring with Miranda Lambert. He had two songwriters – Michael Heeney and Luke Laird – out on the road with him. They’d been writing songs for several days when they came up with “Drink In My Hand.” And, it wasn’t really drinking that inspired the song.

They wrote it one night after Eric came off stage in North Dakota – perhaps with a drink in his hand. They sat on the bus and just started jamming and, apparently, it fell out pretty quick. They wrote most of it on the first night and finished it up the next morning. Luke didn’t drink and Michael drinks very little, so the song wasn’t really as much about drinking as it was a reaction to Eric’s crowds.

When they got back to Nashville, they passed emails back and forth with ideas to fine tune the song. Once it was finished, they really didn’t know if Eric would record it. But, he did and it ended up in a big ole number one hit!

It’s this week’s The Song Remembers When… Here’s Eric Church’s with “Drink In My Hand.”
