I want to take you back to August of this year. Iowa suffered damage due to windstorms that blew through at 140 miles per hour. This storm, or the derecho as it’s called, really uprooted the lives of farmers and many communities in the state.
Tommy Rhomberg was supposed to go to a friend’s party when the storm hit. That party never happened, but the 12-year-old still wanted to give his friend a special gift. He knew that his buddy liked baseball, so he made him a bat and called it “The Great Derecho” after the big storm that blew through. His friend loved it!
When word spread about the homemade bat, other friends wanted one. That gave Tommy the idea to use the wood brought down by the storm to make the bats. He would sell them to raise money for families who needed help most.
To date, Tommy has made 115 bats and donated over $2,500!

Kix’s Response:
Tommy, first of all, at 12 years old to have the thought to do something like this for your community is very commendable, and it’s pretty impressive that you have the skill to make those bats! What a way to give back! So, Tommy Rhomberg, you are this week’s ACC Hero!
