The Song Remembers When: Sam Hunt – “Body Like A Back Road”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In May 2017, Sam Hunt was enjoying a three-week run at the top of the chart with “Body Like A Back Road.” The song was written by Sam, Shane McAnally, Josh Osborne, and Zach Crowell. And, Sam came up with the title.

Shane had been spending time in Charleston, so he suggested that the four of them rent a place and head down to the beach for a few days to do some writing. Well, the writers said that they overwrote the song. They had like 16 verses written before they decided on the final two. Shane said that everyone he writes with is different, and with Sam, he feels like there has to be options to choose from, layers of the song to peel back and get to what sounds and works the best.

After they left Charleston with the song, Sam called the guys and said that he felt the song was “too written.” He wanted the song to be “felt” instead of “heard.” So, they made some changes, and the result was a more conversational song that they all agreed finally felt right.
