Hero of the Week: Shawn Turner

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we share a story out of Boca Raton, Florida. Shawn Turner was driving when his son Timothy spotted a car submerged in a nearby canal. Now if you know anything about Florida, many of those roads down there have canals that run alongside them. And, Shawn said that he might have missed the car had his son not yelled out.

Shawn pulled over and saw other cars on the side of the road. He jumped in and swam up to the vehicle. The windows were cracked, and he was able to pull the window down and swim inside the car where he found an unconscious woman buckled in her seat. Shawn was able to get her out to safety as the car started to sink.

The woman, who suffers from seizures, was sent to the hospital and has recovered. She can’t thank Shawn enough for saving her life. Shawn told his son Timothy that it was a good thing he was watching out the window and not on his cellphone as he usually is and that maybe it’s a good lesson to all of us to pay more attention to our surroundings.

For his bravery, Shawn was honored with the Carnegie Medal, one of the highest awards a civilian can earn in the U.S. and Canada.
