The Song Remembers When: Garth Brooks – “Ask Me How I Know”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In 2017, Garth Brooks returned to the number one spot on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart for the first time in ten years with “Ask Me How I Know.” The song was written by an unknown artist and writer named Mitch Rossell. And, the song was among the handful that Mitch intended to record himself.

Back in 2014, he had heard Garth was going into the studio to record a new album called Man Against Machine. Mitch thought, “What the heck, I’ll send some music his way.” Not planning to get a response, he sent four songs to Garth’s publishing company. To his surprise, he received a response from Garth himself who told him to send him everything he had.  Garth said that he’d heard a lot of music over the years and Mitch’s music just stood out.

Mitch said that “Ask Me How I Know” was autobiographical. He shared that he had always pushed girls away, never letting them get close enough to really make a relationship work, and that was what the song was about. Three years passed before Garth recorded Mitch’s song for his 2016 album Gunslinger, but it was well worth the wait for the young songwriter since it made it to the top of the chart in December 2017 and opened the door to a fruitful relationship for both the artist and the singer-songwriter. Since that time, Mitch has opened shows for Garth during his tours and the superstar has recorded more of his songs that have ended up being hits, including the duet “Dive Bar” with Blake Shelton.
