Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.
For this week’s Hero story, we head North to Harpswell, Maine. Now, some of us get a calling early on in our lives and we know the work we were meant to do and that was the case with Lynda Doughty. Lynda, who grew up on the coast of Maine, developed a passion for helping marine life at a very young age.
She now runs a non-profit called Marine Mammals of Maine. Since opening their doors in 2011, the organization has helped over three thousand marine animals, covering 25 hundred miles of coastline.
At any given time, Lynda can have up to eight seals in her facility where she nurses them back to health. And, it’s not just seals that she helps and responds to. She also aids whales, porpoises, and sea turtles. Lynda has discovered that many of them fall victim to getting tangled in fishing lines and other debris or from illegal feeding and harassment.
When COVID struck, Lynda’s non-profit was deemed essential and she was able to keep the doors open. She said that she feels an immense responsibility to these animals and she knows that this was what she was put on this earth to do.
