Hero of the Week: Dusti Talavera

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we turn the spotlight on 23-year-old Dusti Talavera from Denver, Colorado. She just happened to be looking outside her apartment window when she saw three kids fall into the icy pond just out front of her building.

Dusti said that she didn’t think twice – she just ran outside and ran onto the ice to pull the children to safety. She got two of them out, but when she went to grab the third, a six-year-old girl, Dusti fell through the ice. At that moment, the little girl’s cousin came running out to the pond and threw a rope out to Dusti. She was able to grab that rope and the little girl, and they both were pulled to safety.

Paramedics arrived on the scene. They performed CPR on the little girl who was not breathing. She was sent to the hospital where she has made a full recovery and is now home with her family.

Dusti has been called a hero by the community for her bravery. But, according to her, it was just instinct.

Kix’s Response:

I think most times instincts do kick in and we just do what we do. That is a great story of heroism! Dusti Talavera, you are this week’s ACC Hero.
