Hero of the Week: Kimberly “Smitty” Smith

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

We’ve all heard the unofficial slogan of mail carriers: “Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night can keep them from completing their rounds!” Well, how about we add lifesaving abilities?! That was the case for Colorado Springs Postal Service carrier Kimberly Smith, known as Smitty.

He had just dropped off all the packages at the Candlewood Apartment complex and went into the office to say goodbye as he usually did but no one was there. He thought it was odd and instead of leaving, something told him to stay a little longer. That’s when he saw the manager come into the room soaking wet and crying. Smitty knew something bad had happened. They both ran to the pool in the back and that’s where a 14-year-old girl was lying unresponsive next to the pool.

Since Smitty had served in the military and been trained in CPR, he used those skills to jump into action. The young girl came to and began breathing again just as he heard sirens approaching the area.

Smitty said he’s just happy he was in the right place at the right time and didn’t panic! And, he hopes that this story will encourage others to learn CPR because someone’s life could depend on it.
