We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Everywhere But On”
Songwriters: Matt Stell, Lance Miller, and Paul Sikes
Album: Everywhere But On, Better Than That (EP)
In 2020, Matt Stell would score his second career number one. It was one of his co-writers who threw out the line, “I’ve moved everywhere but on.” That line was the jumping point for the songwriters. It tells the story of a guy who is unable to let go of a lost relationship.
For Matt, the song recalls a time in his life when he was trying to make a career in music, never staying more than three days in one place. He even used a lot of personal details in the lyrics… For instance, Matt wasn’t home long enough to have mail go to his own house, so the line, “my mail is still going to mama’s house,” was true.
The song was released in December 2019, and by November of the following year, Matt had captured the number one spot. “Everywhere But On” would go on to reach gold status, as well.
