We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Hell Of A View”
Songwriters: Eric Church, Casey Beathard, and Monty Criswell
Album: Soul (from the three-album project Heart & Soul)
In 2020, Eric Church headed to the mountains in his home state of North Carolina. He wanted to change the way he’d been making records.
In order to inspire himself, his producer, the musicians and his team of co-writers, the team set up a studio in an abandoned restaurant where they spent a month writing during the day and recording at night. The end result was the triple album Heart & Soul. One of the songs on the Soul portion of the project is “Hell Of A View.” It’s about a couple who took the road less traveled.
On the day the song was written, Eric had just gotten back to the studio after a run through the mountains. Songwriters Casey Beathard and Monty Criswell played him what they’d been working on. He loved it and sat down with them to finish the song.
After the song’s release to radio, “Hell Of A View” made it to the summit in May 2021 becoming Eric’s tenth number one hit.
