Heroes of the Week: Emily Raines and Daniel Shifflett

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

Emily Raines is an acute care nurse at a hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. As she and her boyfriend, Daniel Shifflett, who is a former nurse, were flying home after a vacation in the Bahamas, the flight attendant announced that a man was having a medical emergency and asked if anyone on board had medical training.

Emily immediately jumped up. When Emily and Daniel got to the man, his skin was purple. He was slumped over and not breathing.  They worked on him for about 23 minutes and with just seven minutes left in the flight, they were able to revive the man.

As soon as the plane landed, the man was rushed to the hospital. And, Emily and Daniel received applause from their fellow passengers after saving the man’s life.

The man’s wife says that she can never say thank you enough to the couple.

Emily said she was doing what she was taught to do, and it is a good thing she was in the right place at the right time. We can never thank our nurses enough!!!
