We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “The Only Way I Know”
Songwriters: David Lee Murphy and Ben Hayslip
Album: Night Train
In 2012, Jason Aldean and his producer Michael Knox were pitched the song “The Only Way I Know.” Jason had been looking for a song he could do with his buddies Luke Bryan and Eric Church. He felt like this song was the one!
“The Only Way I Know” had a lot of attitude. Even though Luke isn’t known for an in-your-face kind of song, Jason picked the verse he felt fit Luke’s personality the best. Once he had mapped out who would sing where, they all just waited to have a green light from the labels.
Jason was in the studio when Luke came in to record his part, but when Eric recorded his section, Jason was touring. When Jason came back and sat down with his producer to piece all the parts together, he felt that having the song already figured out helped the song breathe. Jason wanted the listener to have time to tell who was who.
In February 2013, “The Only Way I Know” would go on to become a number one hit! It would also win Vocal Event of the Year at the ACM Awards.
