Hero of the Week: Greg Poole

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

In Benton, Illinois, Greg Poole turned his hobby of collecting sports cards into a way to change people’s lives.

Greg, who had collected tons of sports cards as a kid, suffers from PTSD. As a teenager, he made the decision that he wanted to leave this world. His final act was to sell his card collection and donate the money for food to help the elderly.

Fortunately, his attempt failed. Greg felt that he was saved for a reason. He now has a non-profit named Can’s Can. Every dollar made from selling sports cards in Greg’s shop goes towards helping teachers, assisted living facilities, and social workers. They’re all welcome to come to his store and help themselves to clothes, school supplies, hygiene items, and toys.

During the holiday season, Greg and his family take it a step further by visiting a local assisted living facility and collecting wish lists for Christmas. Then, he personally delivers their presents in time for the holiday.
