We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Heart On Fire”
Songwriters: Eric Church
Album: Heart
In 2020, Eric Church asked his producer, songwriters, and musicians to join him for a marathon recording session. The goal was to write and record a song a day for 28 days in the mountains of his home state, North Carolina.
“Heart On Fire” was the first song recorded. Eric came to the session with it already written. He felt the song was kind of an ice breaker to get them rolling. The idea of the song was built around the line: “Soaking my soul in gas.”
Eric’s background vocalist at the time was Joanna Cotten. She really stands out in this song, and that’s exactly how Eric had written it. He really wanted Joanna’s voice to be a big part of it. You can see that on full display during Eric’s fire-filled performance at the 55th Annual CMA Awards.
Eric credits the song for eventually leading them to what would become the three-album project Heart & Soul. After “Heart On Fire” was released as a single in the summer of 2021, it went on to become a Top Five hit the following April.
