The Song Remembers When: Blake Shelton – “Doin’ What She Likes”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Doin’ What She Likes”
Songwriters: Wade Kirby and Phil O’Donnell
Album: Based On A True Story…

In January 2014, Blake Shelton released “Doin’ What She Likes.” The song was written by Wade Kirby and Phil O’Donnell while on a hunting trip.

Blake liked that it was a romantic song. It was all about a guy taking a day to be with the woman he loves. He personally added the part about “lighting a watermelon candle.” Blake said it struck him as funny because he’d never smelled a watermelon candle. He joked that he should’ve sold them at his merch table.

The video for the song became a fan favorite. It showed Blake tapping into his comedic side, attempting to set up a romantic night. He lit a bunch of candles and winds up setting the house on fire.  Fans were shocked that they burned a house down for the music video, but thanks to the magic of technology, the fire was fake.

“Doin’ What She Likes” took 15 weeks to hit number one where it stayed for two weeks in April 2014. At the time, it was Blake’s 11th consecutive number one.
