We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “The One That Got Away”
Songwriters: Jake Owen, Dallas Davidson, and Jimmy Ritchey
Album: Barefoot Blue Jean Night
In 2012, Jake Owen was on a roll with back-to-back number ones from his Barefoot Blue Jean Night album. The third single, “The One That Got Away,” kept that string of chart-toppers going. The song was written by Jake, Dallas Davidson, and Jimmy Ritchey.
“The One That Got Away” is based on Jake’s real-life experiences. He grew up in Vero Beach, Florida. Every summer, girls would come to the beach with their families and fall for a local guy. They’d spend the summer together, then the girl would go back home, leaving the guy broken-hearted.
One of those “local guys” was Jake. He remembers one girl that he fell for during the summer, and he never saw her again. That event inspired a summer love song full of nostalgia.
“The One That Got Away” was released as a single in Spring 2012 and by December, Jake would have a number one.
