Acie Holland III, a 14-year-old, was on his school bus in Glendale, Wisconsin. It was a typical drive home from school until Acie noticed that the driver missed a turn. He stood up and went down the aisle to see if the driver was joking around. She was known to joke with the students, so he assumed that was what was happening, but then he saw her head drop.
The Glen Hills Middle School eighth grader ran to the front of the bus as the vehicle started drifting into oncoming traffic. Acie was able to move the driver to the side. He was then able to grab the wheel and hit the brakes as he pulled the bus over to the side of the road and to a stop.
Then, Acie asked his friend to quickly call 911, and he told the 14 students on the bus to call their parents. Since he wasn’t far from home, Acie ran to get his grandmother who is a nurse. When they returned to the bus, the driver had come-to and called the bus company. She was taken to the hospital and treated for a medical emergency.
Acie received several awards and citations for his bravery. He said that he felt comfortable with doing what he did because he grew up around cars at his father’s repair shop.
