Hero of the Week: Avery

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

This week, we received an email from a very proud grandparent in Wayne, Ohio. The grandparent writes:

I would like to nominate my granddaughter Avery for saving her little brother’s life. Avery is six years old. She is the daughter of Ashley and Alan of Wayne, Ohio, and the big sister to three-year-old Liam. Liam is special needs, non-verbal, and is “tube-fed” via a J-tube. Complications with the J-tube sometimes forces Liam to get his nutrition through TPN (a line going right into the blood stream).

On Wednesday, July 10th of this year, my daughter Ashley put the kids in the van and was just minutes into a two-hour trip when Avery alerted her mother that Liam was bleeding and had blood on his hands. My daughter pulled the van over. Upon investigation, she found one of the caps had loosened, allowing the blood to leak out. In a short amount of time, he had bled enough to soak through the car seat cover. My daughter immediately tightened the cap which stopped the bleeding and sought medical attention. He was deemed okay, and they continued the trip.

Avery knew that something was wrong and told her mommy. I am confident she saved her brother’s life that day.

Suzanne’s Response:

Wow, Avery, you sound like a very smart six-year-old and very in tune with the care of your brother Liam.

Thank you for sharing this story, and I am happy to call little Avery, of Wayne, Ohio, our ACC Hero of the Week!
