The Song Remembers When: Dylan Scott – “My Girl”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “My Girl”
Songwriters: Dylan Scott, Josh Kerr
Album: Dylan Scott

Dylan Scott made his debut on the scene in 2013, but it wasn’t until July 2017 that he would land his first number one hit with “My Girl,” a song he wrote with songwriter Josh Kerr.

Dylan and his wife Blair had started dating in high school. After graduation, he would make the move from Louisiana to Nashville to pursue his dream of music. Dylan would often make the trip home to see Blair and on one trip, while they were in the car, rapper Eminem came on the radio. Blair started rapping along to every word. Dylan said it was so out of character because she’s pretty shy. On the way back to Nashville, he got to thinking about Blair and her rapping and thought she wouldn’t do that in front of anyone else but him.

When he went to his writing appointment with Josh, Dylan brought up that idea. So, they started writing all the things he knew about Blair since they were 15 and he even worked in that part about her rapping to an Eminem song. Dylan says that all the lines are true except the Crown and Sprite part because she doesn’t drink, but what’s a country song without a little drink?

The song was released shortly after Dylan and Blair were married and not only did it become a number one, but it was certified three times platinum!
