The Song Remembers When: Megan Moroney – “Tennessee Orange”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Tennessee Orange”
Songwriters: Megan Moroney, Ben Williams, David Fanning, and Paul Jenkins
Album: Lucky

Megan Moroney is proud of her Georgia roots.  And, in 2022, she released a song that proved that a girl would do anything for the boy she loved including wearing the colors of her favorite team’s rival.

“Tennessee Orange” was Megan’s first co-write. During that writing session, she brought the line: “In Georgia, they call it a sin, I’m wearing Tennessee orange for him.” They wrote 95% of the song that day. But, right before Megan recorded the song, she and her co-writers got back together to make sure the last chorus talked about her loyalty to the Georgia Bulldogs by adding the line: “And I still want the Dawgs to win.”

Because people are so devoted to their sports teams, the song gained attention with its unique take on sacrificing in the name of love. And, that exposure eventually helped land Megan her record deal!

Not only did “Tennessee Orange” peak inside the Top 5 in June 2023, but it also received a Song of the Year nomination at the CMA Awards – that’s a BIG deal for a new artist on their debut single!
