The Song Remembers When: Jordan Davis – “Next Thing You Know”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “Next Thing You Know”
Songwriters: Jordan Davis, Chase McGill, Greylan James, and Josh Osborne
Album: Bluebird Days

In 2023, Jordan Davis was in a writing session in Nashville when one of his co-writers Chase McGill threw out the title “Next Thing You Know.” He had the idea of a single guy meeting a girl in a bar and vowing to stay single, but the next thing you know…

Jordan loved it but wanted to take it further. He had the idea that the song should be about every stage of a person’s life, from dating to marriage to kids. According to Jordan, there were a few tears in the writing room, and he took it as a sign that you’re writing something real.

“Next Thing You Know” was released as a single from Jordan’s album Bluebird Days in August 2022, and by the following year, Jordan had another hit on his hands when the song peaked just shy of number one. Plus, it was award-winning! It earned Song of the Year honors at the 2024 ACM Awards, marking Jordan’s first ACM trophies (as artist and songwriter) of his career.

The music video for “Next Thing You Know” was a special one, too. It features Jordan and his family at the end of the clip.
