We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Burn It Down”
Songwriters: Parker McCollum, Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey, and Lori McKenna
Album: Never Enough
There’s a trio of songwriters who call themselves the Love Junkies. This group consists of Liz Rose, Hillary Lindsey, and Lori McKenna. They’ve written some of the biggest songs for Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Tim McGraw, and a lot of other artists.
Now, Parker McCollum made a songwriting appointment with the Love Junkies while he was writing songs for his album Never Enough. Liz was the first to arrive and Parker admitted to her that he was feeling pretty burnt from being on the road while working on his album. The project was done, so he felt bad for having them over because he just didn’t have anything left in the tank. But, Liz convinced Parker to just give it go.
When the other two songwriters showed up, Parker and Liz didn’t share how he was feeling, they just started talking and strumming. At some point, Parker started saying “burn it down.” And, the ladies started to fill in the lines after each “burn it down.”
After they finished the song and it came time to record it, Parker credits his producer Jon Randall for creating the moody sound. “Burn It Down” became a number one hit, Parker’s third career chart-topper, in April. Not long after, the song’s music video won an ACM Award for Visual Media of the Year. And, at the upcoming CMA Awards, it’s nominated for Song of the Year.
