Heroes of the Week: Tucker, the Dog, and North Carolina Firefighters

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

The recovery and rebuilding of those hit by Hurricanes Helene and Milton continues, and many families have lost everything including this one just outside of Asheville, North Carolina.

Eleven-year-old Jamie, along with his sister, grandparents, and their dog Tucker, were riding out the storm at home. They were on the couch when Jamie suddenly felt the house move. He was thrown face first into the wall across the living room.

The next thing Jamie knew he was sliding down a mountain with debris and the house covering him. It was dark but he was alive. He started to yell for his family, scared that no one else survived. That is until he heard Tucker barking above.

Jamie’s grandmother somehow wound up on the roof of the house. Her husband was alive and could see his granddaughter. They were all okay. Then, Jamie’s grandfather heard Tucker and went to where he was barking. They were all calling for Jamie, and Tucker kept barking and wouldn’t move from the spot.

The family was able to get firefighters to their location. They found Jamie under all that debris and had him airlifted to the hospital. As last reported, Jamie is okay, and Habitat for Humanity is building the family a new home. Jamie rescued Tucker from a shelter, and everyone is feeling blessed that they’re alive.
