The Song Remembers When: Blake Shelton – “A Guy With A Girl”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “A Guy With A Girl”
Songwriters: Ashley Gorley and Bryan Simpson
Album: If I’m Honest

In 2016, Blake Shelton recorded “A Guy With A Girl.”

Songwriters Ashley Gorley and Bryan Simpson shared their experiences about how they “married up.” They talked about going to an event with their wives and basically being invisible. They didn’t have any particular artist in mind when they first started to write, but as the song progressed, they thought of Blake.

When Blake heard it, he loved the song. He said it reminded him of his hit “Honey Bee.” So, he put the song on hold. When it came time to record his album If I’m Honest, Blake’s life had changed. He was single and soon started dating Gwen Stefani. The song really applied to their relationship. He said that everywhere he went he was always “the guy” with Gwen, but he wasn’t complaining!

The song would be released as the fourth single from If I’m Honest, and it became 23rd number one of Blake’s career. And, fans really dug it because it spent three weeks at the top of the chart in January and February 2017.
