We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Drinking Class”
Songwriters: Josh Kear, David Frasier, and Ed Hill
Album: I Don’t Dance
In 2014, Lee Brice released “Drinking Class,” the second single from his third studio album, I Don’t Dance. Lee felt that it wasn’t a typical drinking song but an anthem for the working class. The writers felt that the song spoke to the struggles of the modern-day middle class. It was a tribute to those who work hard, live paycheck to paycheck, and keep the country running.
When Lee heard the initial demo, he felt it needed a raw, more organic sound. He wanted the music to reflect the grit of the lyrics, envisioning hands clapping and boots stomping – something steel mill workers could sing along to.
Though the song peaked just shy of number one in 2015, it gained so much popularity that it eventually became Billboard’s most-played country song of the year.
