Heroes of the Week: Jeff and Greg Lipple

Two brothers from Cedarville, Michigan, saved a deer that had fallen through the ice on Cedarville Bay. The deer, covered in icicles, was swimming in a small circle of open water surrounded by ice. Jeff Lipple first attempted the rescue by walking onto the ice and using a ladder, but he couldn’t get close enough.

Jeff’s brother Greg then brought out his kayak and a rope. He dropped the kayak into the area close to the deer, slipped the rope around her, and pulled her out of the icy water onto the hard ice. Though the doe fell through again, this time in a smaller hole, the brothers quickly rescued her a second time. She eventually made it safely to shore.

The Island View Resort, located near the bay, issued a warning about the thin ice and urged residents to have emergency plans in place. Thanks to Greg and Jeff Lipple’s quick thinking and heroic actions, the deer survived.
