The Song Remembers When: “American Kids” – Kenny Chesney

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In September of 2014, Kenny Chesney reached the top of the Countdown for the 25th time with his song “American Kids” – love this song!

So, the hit was written by Rodney Clawson, Luke Laird, and Shane McAnally.
Shane said that they all just added words and phrases to form the lyrics and, in the end, the images give you this feeling that you’re watching a slideshow.
So, he knew it would be perfect for Kenny, and he emailed it to him.

The story goes that Kenny never checked his inbox, and by the time he remembered it was there, Little Big Town had started working on it for their album. Well, Shane made the call to the band, and Little Big Town graciously let it go.

Kenny said that it was unlike anything he had ever recorded as far as the melody and the rhythm. And, he loved the sentiment of “we’re a little messed up, but we’re all alright” because as he put it, “life is not perfect and this song captures all the little things that life is really made of.”

It was the first single off his The Big Revival album, and it’s this week’s The Song Remembers When – “American Kids:”
