It’s the holidays and this time of year is all about giving back, and one community in New Jersey has been doing just that.

Brick Wenzel, a fisherman, started what’s called The Seafood Gleaning Program – gleaning meaning gathering fish that would otherwise be tossed away because the commercial market didn’t have a need for it.  So, Brick went to work, and he found several companies that would freeze the fish, package it, and help distribute it to local food shelters.

Many other people have gotten involved in the Monmouth and Ocean County areas of New Jersey including the former lieutenant governor, who started a nonprofit called Fulfill Food Pantry. That organization feeds the hungry with a network of 289 pantries, soup kitchens, and women’s shelters supplying food for 136 thousand folks on a regular basis.

Brick, who started this program, is trying to get other fishermen involved around the country. He feels if just one percent of the commercial fisherman in the U.S. would participate in the Seafood Gleaning Program that 42 million meals could be served yearly to those who are in need of food.

Kix’s Response:

Man, what a great idea! And, the kind of fish we’re talking about is white fish, calamari, sting ray, everything. This would allow shelters to serve up fish stew and other recipes that they normally would never have access to… And when you think about it, isn’t that what Christmas is all about?

Great going Brick Wentzel, who started working on this idea over two years ago! Brick, you are this week’s ACC Hero!
