The Song Remembers When: Dustin Lynch – “Ridin’ Roads”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

In January 2020, Dustin Lynch kicked off the year by landing his seventh career number one with “Ridin’ Roads.” The song became Dustin’s second number one as a songwriter. A year earlier, he scored his first chart-topper as a songwriter with “Good Girl.”

Dustin wrote “Ridin’ Roads” with Ashley Gorley and Zach Crowell. He had the idea for the song after seeing a video that his friends posted online of a truck full of guys and girls driving down a dirt road blasting music and having a great time in the country. Dustin said that he, Ashley, and Zach spent a few hours trying to figure out how to make the song sound “tough and sexy.” They wanted to capture that same vibe featured in the video that his friends posted.

Dustin also wanted to add his own life experiences into the song. Growing up in Tullahoma, Tennessee, he remembered that his cousins actually served time in jail because they were caught with a bunch of street signs in their attic. Dustin said that they just did stupid stuff as kids, always trying to impress their friends, so he highlighted that in the song with the lines:

“I don’t know where we are
‘Cause somebody stole the street signs
I’ma take my sweet time.”

“Ridin’ Roads” would go on to be certified platinum. It was the second single from Dustin’s fourth studio album Tullahoma.
