We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…
Song: “Break Up In A Small Town”
Songwriters: Sam Hunt, Zach Crowell, and Shane McAnally
Album: Montevallo
When Sam Hunt released the fourth single, “Break Up In A Small Town,” from his debut album, Montevallo, he was already enjoying major success. The albums first three singles not only went number one but were all certified platinum, so to say Sam was on a roll would be an understatement.
Sam was a writer on all the songs featured on his debut album, including “Break Up In A Small Town” which he wrote with Zach Crowell and Shane McAnally. Sam had the chorus in his head, and he’d been driving around trying to come up with song ideas when the melody finally came to him.
It was one of the last songs written for the album. He’d already had a few breakup songs and didn’t want to write another one. The reason for the other songs was because he’d split up with his girlfriend, now wife, Hannah, but Sam admitted it was too perfect not to write.
“Break Up In A Small Town” reached just shy of the top spot in February 2016.
