Hero of the Week: Bob Van Dillen

Throughout the week, our ACC Team searches through emails and news articles looking for someone who deserves to be the Hero of the Week… Find out how you can nominate a Hero of the Week at the bottom of the page.

There are a lot of hero stories about people helping each other during the catastrophic events that took place in the wake of Hurricane Helene. One that made headlines was about a meteorologist named Bob Van Dillen. He saved a woman who was trapped by the flood waters in her car.

Van Dillen was reporting in the Atlanta, Georgia, area with a flooded road behind him. While he was on the air, there was a car in the flood waters. You could actually hear a woman screaming from the car! The water was about to submerge the vehicle completely. So, Van Dillen – as his newscast continued – put his mic down and told the news team that he had to get the woman out of her car himself!

The next shot showed Van Dillen carrying the woman out of the chest-high waters. He was able to give her dry clothes and take her to the TV truck so she could get warm.

First responders showed up. When they saw she was okay, they drove on to the next rescue.
