The Song Remembers When: Lee Brice – “I Don’t Dance”

We take you behind the scenes and explore the making of one of our favorite tunes with The Song Remembers When…

Song: “I Don’t Dance”
Songwriters: Lee Brice, Rob Hatch, and Dallas Davidson
Album: I Don’t Dance

In 2014, Lee Brice was two albums and three number ones into his career. He was ready to put out his third album and knew he had the perfect title cut. “I Don’t Dance” was a song title he had in his phone. It was the story of a guy who couldn’t dance but he would if his wife wanted him to.

When Lee sat down with songwriters Rob Hatch and Dallas Davidson, one of the guys mentioned something about dancing, so Lee brought up his idea. That day, they wrote the chorus and the next day, they finished the song. For Lee, it was something special because he saw it as a tribute to his wife. They even used it as their first dance song at their wedding.

“I Don’t Dance” won the ACM Award for Single of the Year in 2015 and received CMA Award nominations for both Song and Single of the Year. Fans loved it so much that it became a number one hit for Lee in August 2014 and a four-times platinum-certified single.
